Q. Haeckel kept bacteria, algae, fungi and protozoans in the kingdom

NTA AbhyasNTA Abhyas 2020

Solution:

Ernst Haeckel (1866), a German zoologist suggested that a third kingdom, Protista be created to include those unicellular microorganisms that are typically neither plants nor animals. He had bacteria, algae, fungi and protozoa under protista. The three main kingdoms, according to Haeckel, were plants, animals and protists. The major limitation of the three kingdom classification was that he put widely dissimilar organisms under the same kingdom. Unicellular algae are kept in kingdom protista, whereas algae-like multicellular microorganisms are kept in kingdom plantae.
