Q. GUG normally codes for valine, but at start position, it codes for methionine. The given statement is an exception to which property of genetic code?

Solution:

A codon is a sequence of three DNA or RNA nucleotides that corresponds with a specific amino acid or stop signal during protein synthesis.
There are in all 64 codons out of which 61 codons code for amino acids and 3 codons code for nothing.
Non-coding codons (UAA, UGA, and UAG) are also known as stop codons.
Following are the properties exhibited by codons :
  • It is a triplet
  • Degeneracy
  • Non-overlapping
  • Comma less
  • Unambiguous
  • Universal
  • Co-linearity
  • Gene-polypeptide parity
Genetic codes are unambiguous, i.e. one codon codes for only one amino acid and specific i.e. one codon codes for only one amino acid.
But GUG is ambiguous codon. It normally codes for valine but at initiating position it codes for methionine as well.
