Q. Given that, velocity of light in quartz = 1.5 x 108 m/s and velocity of light in glycerine = (9/4) x 108 m/s. If a slab made of quartz is placed in glycerine as shown in the figure. How much is the shift (in cm) in the position of the object produced by slab?

Solution:

Solution
$n _{\text {quartz }}=2$
$n _{\text {glycerine }}=\frac{4}{3}$
$\Rightarrow \mu_{\text {rel }}=\frac{ n _{\text {quartz }}}{ n _{\text {glycerinc }}}=\frac{2}{4 / 3}=\frac{3}{2}$
shift $= t \left(1-\frac{1}{\mu_{ rl }}\right)=18\left(1-\frac{1}{3 / 2}\right)=6 cm$
