Solution:

The fusion of gametes in algae takes place in three different ways:
  • Isogamy is a condition in which both male and female gametes are identical and are motile. Physically they cannot be distinguished. This is seen in Ulothrix. Some species of Chlamydomonas also show this mode.
  • Anisogamy is a condition in which both male and female gametes are motile. The male gametes are smaller, while the female gamete is larger. This is found in Chlamydomonas, Fucus, etc.
  • Oogamy is a condition in which the male gamete is smaller and motile, while the female gamete is larger and non-motile. This is a type of anisogamy. This is found in some species of Volvox. Some species of Chlamydomonas also show this mode.
