Q. Formation of $PCl_3$ is explained on the basis of what hybridisation of phosphorus atom

MHT CETMHT CET 2018Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure

Solution:

The type of hybridisation in an atom can be determined By using the formula

$H=\frac{1}{2}[V+Y-C+A]$

Here, $V=$ valence shell electrons of the central atom

$Y=$ number of monovalent atom

$C=$ total positive charge and

$A=$ total negative charge In case of $PCl _{3}$

$H=\frac{1}{2}[5+3]=4$

Hybridisation of phosphorus atom is $s p^{3}$.
