Q. For the reaction: $SO _{2} Cl _{2}( g ) \rightarrow SO _{2}( g )+ Cl _{2}( g )$ It is found that a plot of $ln\left[SO_{2} Cl_{2}\right]$ Versus time is linear, and that in $240s$ , the $\left[SO_{2} Cl_{2}\right]$ decreases from $0.4M$ to $0.28M$ , If the rate constant is $AX10^{- 3}$ in $s^{- 1}$ , report the value of A by rounding it off to one decimal and multiplying with 2.

Solution:

$\left(SO\right)_{2}\left(Cl\right)_{2}\left(\right.g\left.\right) \rightarrow \left(SO\right)_{2}\left(\right.g\left.\right)+\left(Cl\right)_{2}\left(\right.g\left.\right)$
$\text{Since the plot of ln}\left[SO_{2} Cl_{2}\right]Vs\text{ time is linear, the order of the reaction is}1.\text{Now, for a first order reaction,}$
$Kt=2.303log\frac{\left[SO_{2} Cl_{2}\right]_{o}}{\left[SO_{2} Cl_{2}\right]_{t}}$
$K\times 240=2.303log\frac{0 . 4}{0 . 28}$
$K=\frac{0 . 35674}{240}=1.484\times 10^{- 3}s^{- 1}$ .
