Q. For the reaction $Fe_2O_3 +3CO \rightarrow 2Fe + 3CO_2$ the volume of carbon monoxide required to reduce one mole of ferric oxide is

KCETKCET 2008Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry

Solution:

$\underset{1\,mol} {Fe _{2}O_{3}}+\underset{3 mol }{3 CO } \longrightarrow 2 Fe +3 CO _{2}$

Volume of $1\, mole$ carbon monoxide

$ = 22.4\, L$ (at STP)

$1 $ mole of ferric oxide is reduced by $= 3$ moles of $CO$

$=3 \times 22.4\, L$ of $CO$

$=67.2 \,dm ^{3}$ of $CO$
