MTP is the abbreviation for Medical Termination of Pregnancy. It is an intentional or voluntary termination of pregnancy in some exceptional cases such as rapes or when the continuation of the pregnancy may be fatal for either mother or foetus or both. The Government of India had legalised this technique in 1971 with some important restrictions. MTP can be performed up to 12 weeks or the first trimester of pregnancy. This period is relatively safe as compared to the second trimester, which is much riskier.
