Work done W =$\int F$ dx
$W=\int^{x=3}_{x=1} F.dx =\int ^{x=3}_{x=1} (5x-4)dx$
$W=\left(\frac{5x^2}{2}-4x\right)^{x=3}_{x=1}$
$=2.5(3^2-1^2)-4(3-1)=20-8=12 J$
