Q. $ Fe^{2+} $ ion is distinguished from $ Fe^{3+} $ ion by :

UPSEEUPSEE 2005

Solution:

The chemical compounds to be distinguished should give different colouration with reagent.

$Fe ^{2+}+ NH _{4} SCN \longrightarrow $ No Change in colour

$Fe ^{3+}+ NH _{4} SCN \longrightarrow $ Red colouration

$\therefore \, NH _{4} SCN$ is used to distinguish between $Fe ^{2+}$ and $Fe ^{3+}$
