Q. Excess of ethanol when heated with concentrated $H _{2} SO _{4}$ at $140^{\circ} C$, the compound obtained is

Alcohols Phenols and Ethers

Solution:

$\underset{\text{(Ethanol Excess )}}{C_2H_5OH} \xrightarrow[100 - 110^{\circ}C]{Conc. H_2SO_4} \underset{\text{(Ethyl hydrogen sulphate)}}{C_2H_5HSO_4} \xrightarrow[140^{\circ}C]{C_2H_5OH}$
$\underset{\text{(Ethoxy ethane)}}{(C_2H_5)_2O} + \underset{\text{(Sulphuric acid)}}{H_2SO_4}$
In this reaction, ethoxy ethane $\left[\left( C _{2} H _{5}\right)_{2} O \right]$ is obtained.
