Q. Excess of $AgNO _{3}$ was added to the following compounds: (i) $PtCl _{4} \cdot 2 NH _{3}$ (ii) $PtCl _{2} \cdot 2 NH _{3}$ (iii) $PtCl _{2} \cdot 4 NH _{3}$ and $0,0$ and $2$ moles of $AgCl$ per mole of the compound was precipitated. What is the secondary valency of the compounds (i), (ii) and (iii)?

Coordination Compounds

Solution:

The structure of first complex is $[Pt(NH \left.\left._{3}\right)_{2} Cl _{4}\right]$ as it does not give $Cl ^{-}$ ions on reaction with $AgCl$ thus secondary valency $=6$

The structure of second complex $\left[ Pt \left( NH _{3}\right)_{2} Cl _{2}\right]$ as it does not give $Cl ^{-}$ ions on reaction with $AgCl$ thus secondary valency $=4$

The structure of third complex is $\left[ Pt \left( NH _{3}\right)_{4}\right] Cl _{2}$.

As is gives two ions on reaction with $AgNO _{3}$ thus secondary valency $=4$
