Question
(i) How many compounds give a substitution reaction with $CH_{3}\overset{\ominus}{S}\overset{\oplus}{Na}?$

NTA AbhyasNTA Abhyas 2022

Solution:

$CH_{3}\overset{\ominus}{S}\overset{\oplus}{Na}$ is a strong nucleophile. When it reacts with alkyl halide, it will give the $SN2$ reaction mechanism and elimination reaction. The halide which is attached to the double bond cannot give the substitution and elimination reaction. Tertiary halide will give the elimination reaction because of the steric hindrance.
So, the compound (a),(b),(c),(h) and (i) can give a substitution reaction with $CH_{3}\overset{\ominus}{S}\overset{\oplus}{Na}$ .
