The ribosomes are classified on the basis of sedimentation coefficient in the centrifuge. It is measured as Svedberg unit (S). On the basis of sedimentation coefficient they are $70 \,S$ and $80\, S .70\, S$ ribosome (having larger $50 \,S$ and smaller $30\,S$ subunits) are present in prokaryotes. $80\,S$ ribosome (having larger $60 \,S$ and smaller $40\, S$ subunits) are present in eukaryotes.
