Q. Ethanol on reaction with alk. $KMnO _{4}$ gives $X$ which when reacted with methanol in the presence of an acid gives a sweet smelling compound $Y, X$ and $Y$ respectively, are

KVPYKVPY 2009

Solution:

Ethanol on reaction with alkaline $KMnO _{4}$ gives acetic acid $(X)$, which when reacts with methanol in the presence of an acid gives methyl acetate $(Y)$, which is a sweet smelling compound.
$\underset{\text{Ethanol}}{CH _{3} CH _{2} OH} \xrightarrow[KMnO_4]{\text { Alkaline }}\underset{\text{Acetic Acid}}{CH _{3} COOH (X)}$

Thus, $X$ and $Y$ respectively are acetic acid and methyl acetate.
