Q.
Ethane is formed by the reaction of methyl iodide and sodium metal in dry ether solution. This reaction is known as
Chhattisgarh PMTChhattisgarh PMT 2007
Solution:
When alkyl halide reacts with sodium metal in presence of dry ether to give higher alkane. This reaction is called Wurtz reaction. eg,
$\underset{\text { methyl iodide }}{ CH _{3}- I} +2 Na + I - CH _{3} \xrightarrow{\text { Dry ether }}\underset{\text { ethane }}{ CH _{3}- CH _{3}+2 NaI }$
