Q.
Equivalent weight of carbon in $CO$ and $CO_2$ are in the ratio of:
Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry
Solution:
To find: Ratio of equivalent weight of carbon in $CO$ and $CO _{2}$.
Solution: We know that, equivalent weight
$=\frac{\text { Molar weight }}{\text { valency }}$
Let valency of $C$ be $x$ in $CO$ and charge on $O$ atom is $O$
$\Rightarrow x +(-2)=0$
$\Rightarrow x =2$
Hence, valency of $C$ in $CO$ is $2$.
Similarly, the valency of $CO _{2}$ is $4$.
Now, equivalent weight of $C$ in $CO =\frac{12}{2}=6$
(since molar weight of carbon atom is $12\,g$)
And equivalent wt of $C$ in $CO _{2}=\frac{12}{4}=3$
Hence, the required ratio $=6: 3=2: 1$
