Q. Endodermis mainly helps in

UP CPMTUP CPMT 2007

Solution:

Endodermis is single layered structure which separates cortex from stele. It lies outer to pericycle regarded as inner most layer of cortex distinct in all roots, dicot stems but absent in monocot stems. The cells of endodermis are barrel shaped without intercellular spaces, living and contain starch. Radial and tangential walls of endodermis cells possess thickenings of lignin, suberin and cutin in the form of strips or bands which are known as casparian bands. The function of endodermis is to control the movement of water between cortex and xylem.
