Solution:

Restriction enzymes, also called restriction nucleases (EcoRI in this question), surround the DNA molecule at the recognition point (sequence GAATTC for EcoRI). EcoRI cuts one strand of the DNA double helix at one point and the second strand at the complementary point (between the G and A base).
