In Haloform reaction chlorination followed by oxidation. Hydrolysis of bleaching powder produces chlorine and calcium hydroxide.

$CaOCl _{2}+ H _{2} O \stackrel{\text { Hydrolysis }}{\longrightarrow } Ca ( OH )_{2}+ Cl _{2}$

$CH_{3}CH_{2}OH+Cl_{2}\overset{\text{Oxidation}}{ \rightarrow }CH_{3}CHO+2HCl$
