Since external forces are absent, so the total momentum of the system remains constant. However, internal forces, may alter the momentum of each particle. But since internal forces are always equal and opposite, so the change in momentum (during any time interval) corresponding to these forces are also equal and opposite. In words, momentum is exchanged.
