Solution:
Dormancy is a state of suspended physical and physiological functions for a short (or long) period of time. In the life span of most of the organisms, the dormancy period is present. In animals, this phenomenon is also called Aestivation, Hibernation, etc.
In plants, Dormancy is profound in seeds, tuber, rhizomes, etc. Seed dormancy, which is also called Embryo dormancy or Internal dormancy. This dormancy is maintained either (i) genetically or (ii) Abscisic acid, a plant hormone.
Auxins, being a major plant growth regulator (specifically Promoter), help in breaking the dormancy of seeds. Seeds with prolonged dormancy periods are treated with dilute solutions of Auxins. They absorb the solution and eventually resume normal physiological conditions which help them in germination.
Similarly, dormancy is also seen in tubers and buds. Typically, tuber-related dormancy is overcome by spraying auxins or Maleic Hydrazide solutions.
Naphthalene Acetic Acid, Indole Butyric Acid (both are a type of auxins), and Maleic Hydrazide help in breaking seed dormancy.
