Darwin realised that under the intense competition of members in a population, any variation which favoured survival in a particular environment would increase the individuals ability to reproduce and leave fertile off springs. While less favourable variations decrease the chance of successful reproduction. Hence, Darwin judged the fitness of an individual by reproducing ability and the number of off springs.
