Q. Craniosacral outflow refers to

NTA AbhyasNTA Abhyas 2020

Solution:

The Autonomic neural system (which is a division of the peripheral neural system) consist of two major systems, i.e, the sympathetic neural system and the parasympathetic neural system.
The sympathetic neural system is responsible for functions associated with stressful events wherein the "fight or flight" response is required. On the other hand, the parasympathetic neural system is responsible for the activities that take place when the body is at rest, especially after eating. Salivation, digestion, urination, defecation, lacrimation, etc are few of the activities for which parasympathetic neural system is responsible.
The nerve fibres of the sympathetic neural system arises from the middle of the spinal cord, starting at the 1st thoracic vertebra of the vertebral column. Owning to this location, the sympathetic neural system is known to have a thoracolumbar outflow.
The nerve fibres of the parasympathetic neural system arise from the CNS (Central Neural System) which includes cranial nerves and the spinal nerves. Because of this location, the parasympathetic neural system is known to have a craniosacral outflow.
