Q. Consider the reaction:
$RCHO + NH_2NH_2 \to RCH = N — NH_2 + H_2O$
This reaction is

Aldehydes Ketones and Carboxylic Acids

Solution:

The reaction $RCHO + NH _{2} NH _{2} \rightarrow RCH = N - NH _{2}$ is a nucleophilic addition-elimination reaction.
First a molecule of hydrazine is added to the carbonyl group.
This is a nucleophilic addition reaction.
$RCHO + NH _{2} NH _{2} \rightarrow RCH ( OH )- NH - NH _{2}$
Then a molecule of water is eliminated. This is an elimination reaction.
$RCH ( OH )- NH - NH _{2} \rightarrow RCH = N - NH _{2}+ H _{2} O$
