According to Bronsted-Lowry concept, after losing a proton, acids convert into conjugate base and after gaining a proton, bases convert into their conjugate acid, ie,

Acid $- H ^{+} \to $ conjugate base

Base $+ H ^{+} \to$ conjugate acid

Thus, conjugate acid-base pair is differ by proton
