Q. Compounds ' $A$ ', ' $B$ ' and ' $C$' have the same molecular formula $C _7 H _8 O$. Compound ' $A$ ' and ' $B$ ' liberate hydrogen gas with sodium metal. When treated with sodium hydroxide, compound ' $B$ ' alonedissolves. Compound ' $C$ ' is inert towards both sodium metal and sodium hydroxide. Compounds ' $A$ ', ' $B$ ' and ' $C$ ' are respectively

Solution:

Compound $A$ is benzyl alcohol because it liberates hydrogen gas with sodium metal.

Also, benzyl alcohol do not dissolve in sodium hydroxide. Compound $B$ is cresol as it liberates hydrogen gas with sodium and further dissolves in sodium hydroxide.

Compound $C$ is anisole $\left( C _7 H _8 O \right)$ as it does not react with $Na$ metal and $NaOH$.
