Q. Complete hydrolysis of $XeF _4$ and $XeF _6$ gives its oxides $P$ and $Q$, respectively. Identify $P$ and $Q$

TS EAMCET 2021

Solution:

The complete hydrolysis of $XeF _4$ and $XeF _6$ produces $XeO _3$ which is xenon trioxide. This xenon trioxide is highly explosive and acts as a powerful oxidising agent in solution.
Complete hydrolysis of $XeF _4$
$\underset{\text { Xenon tetrafluoride }}{6 XeF _4}+12 H _2 O \rightarrow \underset{\text { Xenon }}{4 Xe }+\underset{\text { Xenon trioxide }(P)}{2 XeO _3} \underset{ \text { Hydrogen fluoride }}{24 HF }+3 O _2$
$XeF _4$ on partial hydrolysis produces $XeOF _2$ (xenon oxyfluoride).
Complete hydrolysis of $XeF _6$
$XeF _6$ is one of 3 binary fluoride formed by the xenon. $XeO _3$ is highly explosive and acts as a powerful oxidising agent in solution.
$\underset{\text { Xenon hexafluoride }}{ XeF _6}+3 H _2 O \rightarrow \underset{\text { Xenon trioxide }(Q)}{ XeO _3}+\underset{\text { Hydrogen }}{6 HF }$
