Q. Complete hydrolysis of cellulose gives:

AIEEEAIEEE 2003Biomolecules

Solution:

Partial hydrolysis of cellulose gives the disaccharide cellobiose $\left( C _{12} H _{22} O _{11}\right) .$ Cellobiose resembles maltose (which on acid catalysed hydrolysis yields two molar equivalents of $D$ -Glucose) in every respect except one : the configuration of its glycosidic linkage.
