Q. Cobalt (III) chloride forms several octahedral complexes with ammonia. Which of the following will not give test of chloride ions with silver nitrate at 25°C?

Solution:

As $CoCl_{3}.3NH_{3}$ is represented as $\left[\right.Co\left(\right.NH_{3}\left(\left.\right)_{3}Cl_{3}\left]\right.$ it means it does not have any ionisable $Cl^{-}$ hence no white ppt of AgCl is possible. In other three complexes given here ionisable $Cl^{-}$ is possible so white ppt of AgCl is possible.
$\left[\right.Co\left(\right.NH_{3}\left(\left.\right)_{3}Cl_{3}\left]\right.\overset{A g N O_{3}}{ \rightarrow }$ no ppt
