Q. Cinnamic acid is formed when $ C_6H_5—CHO $ condenses with $ (CH_3CO)_2O $ in presence of

AMUAMU 2019

Solution:

When $C_{6}H_{5}CHO$ condenses with $(CH_{3}CO)_{2}O$ in presence of sodium acetate then cinnamic acid is formed. This reaction is called Perkin reaction
$\underset{\text{Benzaldehyde}}{{C_{6}H_{5}—CHO}}+\underset{\text{Acetic anhydnde}}{{(CH_{3}CO)_{2}O}} \xrightarrow[{100^{\circ}C}] {CH_{3}COONa}$
$\underset{\text{Cinnamic acid}}{{C_{6}H_{5}CH = CHCOOH}}+\underset{\text{Acetic acid}}{{CH_{3}COOH}}$
