Q. Choose the correct order of decreasing basic strength of the following compounds in aqueous solution
(i) $C _{6} H _{5} NH _{2}$
(ii) $C _{2} H _{5} NH _{2}$
(iii) $NH _{3}$
(iv) $\left( CH _{3}\right)_{2} NH$

Solution:

More the availability of $N$ -atom to donate its lone pair, more will be basicity of amine.

Thus, presence of electron releasing groups (like $- CH _{3},- C _{2} H _{5}$ ) increases the basicity but presence of electron withdrawing group (Like $- C _{6} H _{5}$ ) decreases the basicity. Ammonia $\left( NH _{3}\right)$ because of the absence of any group is less basic than the amines having electron releasing group. Thus, the order of basic strength of the given compounds is
