Bicarbonate ions which are formed inside the $RBC$ diffuse from $RBC$ into the plasma . To maintain the ionic balance $Cl^{-}$ ions move from plasma into $RBCs$. This ionic exchange is called chloride shift or Hamburger's phenomenon
