Chitin is principal structural component of the exoskeleton of invertebrates, eg, arthropods and is also a major cell wall constituent of most fungi and many algae. It is almost as abundant as cellulose. It is a homopolymer of $\beta -1, 4$-linked $N$-acetyl-$D$-glucosamine residues as shown below :
