Chitin is principal structural component of the exoskeleton of invertebrates, eg, arthropods and is also a major cell wall constituent of most fungi and many algae. It is almost as abundant as cellulose. It is a homopolymer of β−1,4-linked N-acetyl-D-glucosamine residues as shown below :
