In 1731 Amrita Devi Bishnoi sacrificed her life for protecting trees in Jodhpur. Chipko movement in which local women showed enormous bravery in protecting trees by hugging them occurred in 1974 in Garhwal Himalayas led by Gaura Devi. Appiko movement is the southern version of the Chipko movement. It occurred in 1983 in Uttara Kannada led by Pandurang Hegde. Narmada Bachao Andolan started in 1985 in Maharashtra/ Gujarat led by Medha Patkar to reduce the proposed height of Sardar Sarovar dam from 130 to 88 m.
