Q. $CH_{3}COCH_{3} \, $ and $CH_{3}CH_{2}CHO$ can be distinguished by

NTA AbhyasNTA Abhyas 2020Aldehydes Ketones and Carboxylic Acids

Solution:

By neutral $\text{FeCl}_{\text{3}}$ only allylic and phenol can be distinguished.

By $\text{NaHSO}_{3}$ and 2,4-DNP: ketone and aldehyde both can give test.

Ketone and aldehyde can be distinguished by Tollen's reagent, Fehling's solution and Schiff's reagent.

$CH_{3}COCH_{3}$ (ketone) and $CH_{3}CH_{2}CHO \, $ (aldehyde) can be distinguished by Tollen's reagent. $CH_{3}CH_{2}CHO$ reacts with Tollen's reagent to give silver mirror while $CH_{3}COCH_{3}$ does not react.
