Q. Cause of heat production in a current carrying conductor is :

UPSEEUPSEE 2006

Solution:

In a current carrying conductor, the cause of heat production is due to collision of free electrons with the ions or atoms of the conductor while drifting towards the positive end of the conductor and there by losing the gained kinetic energy, which is taken by atoms or ions of the conductor. As a result of which the average kinetic energy of vibration of atoms or ions increases and hence, temperature of conductor increases.
