Carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogen oxide and CFCs are called greenhouse gases because these gases absorb long wave infrared radiation, which is released by the earth. So, the re-radiation of infrared radiation is affected and prevent the escaping of heat to outer space. Therefore are functionally comparable to glass panel of a greenhouse and are known as greenhouse gases and effect is called as greenhouse effect.
