Q. Carbon and oxygen forms two compounds. Carbon content in one of them is $42.9\%$ while in the other is $27.3\%$. The give data is in support with

AIIMSAIIMS 2015

Solution:

If $C=42.9 \%$ then $O=100-42.9=57.1 \%$
Let $100\, g$ of the compound is taken,
then $1 \, g$ oxygen combines with $=\frac{42.9}{57.1}$
$=0.75\, g$ carbon.
In the second compound, $o =100-27.3 \, n=72.7 \%$
$1\, g$ oxygen combines with $=\frac{27.3}{72.7}$
$=0.375\, g$ of carbon
Ratio of carbon in two compounds combining with fixed weight of oxygen
$=0.75: 0.375=2: 1$
Hence, it supports law of multiple proportion.
