Q. Cannizaro reaction is performed by

UPSEEUPSEE 2009

Solution:

Cannizaro reaction is given by only those aldehydes and ketones in which $\alpha$ - Hatom is absent.
Formaldehyde $(HCHO)$ and benzaldehyde $\left( C _{6} H _{5} CHO \right)$ both due to the absence of $\alpha- H$ atom undergo Cannizaro reaction as

$2 HCHO \ce{->[{{\text{conc}}.NaOH}]}\underset{\text { methyl alcohol }}{ CH _{3} OH } + \underset{\text{sodium formate}}{HCOONa}$
