Q. Calculate bond enthalpy (in $kJ\,mol^{- 1}$ ) of $C-Cl$ in $CCl_{4}\left(g\right)$ from the following
Data:
$\Delta _{vap}H_{CCl_{4}}^{^\circ }=30.5\,kJ\,mol \,\,\Delta _{f} H_{\left(CCl_{4} , l\right)}^{^\circ }=-135.5\,kJ/mole$
$\Delta _{a}H^\circ \left(C\right)=715\,kJ/mol$ (i.e. enthalpy of atomisation)
$\Delta _{a}H_{Cl_{2}}^{^\circ }=242\,kJ/mole$

Solution:

$C(s) +2 Cl _{2} (g) \rightarrow CCl _{4} (\ell)\,\, \Delta H =-135.5\, KJ / mole$ $CCl _{4} (\ell) \rightarrow CCl _{4} (g)\,\, \Delta H =30.5\, KJ /$ mole $C(s) +2 Cl _{2} (g) \longrightarrow CCl _{4} (g)\,\, \Delta H =-105\, KJ /$ mole $715+2 \times 242-4 \times x=-105$
$x =326 KJ /$ mole
i.e. $x = B . E .$ of $C - Cl$ in $CCl _{4} (g)$
