Q. Calcium imide on hydrolysis gives gas $B$ which on oxidation by bleaching powder gives gas $C$ . Gas $C$ on reaction with magnesium give compound $D$ which on hydrolysis gives again gas $B$ . Identify $B$ , $C$ and $D$ respectively.

Solution:

Here $B, C$ and $D$ are $NH_{3},N_{2}$ and $Mg_{3}N_{2}$ respectively
$Ca(NH)+2H_{2}O \rightarrow Ca(OH)_{2}+\underset{( B )}{N H_{3} \left(\right. g \left.\right)}$
$\underset{( B )}{2 N H_{3}}+3CaOCl_{2} \rightarrow \underset{(C)}{N_{2} (g )}+3CaCl_{2}+3H_{2}O$
$\underset{(C )}{N_{2} ( g )}+3Mg \rightarrow \underset{( D )}{M g_{3} N_{2}}$
$\underset{( D )}{M g_{3} N_{2}}+6H_{2}O \rightarrow 3Mg(OH)_{2}+\underset{(B )}{2 N H_{3}}$
