Q. $C_4H_10 O \xrightarrow[{H_2SO_4}]{{K_2Cr_2O_7} }C_4H_5O \xrightarrow[{\text{Warm}}]{{I_2/NaOH} }CHI_3$ Here, $N$ is

WBJEEWBJEE 2018Aldehydes Ketones and Carboxylic Acids

Solution:

Given sequence of chemical equation is

$\underset{(N)}{C_4H_{10} O} \xrightarrow[{H_2SO_4 (step I)}]{{K_2Cr_2O_7} }C_4H_8O \xrightarrow[\text{warm (step II)}] {{I_2/NaOH }}CHI_3$

Here, $N$ will be image (IUPAC name $=$ Butan-2-ol)

Step I It involves the oxidation of secondary alcohol to corresponding alcohol in the presence of $K _{2} Cr _{2} O _{7}$ and $H _{2} SO _{4}$

Step II It involves the iodoform reaction. Ketone formed in step I have one methyl group linked to the carbonyl carbon atom are oxidised by sodium hypohalite to sodium salts of corresponding carboxylic acids having one carbon atom less than that of carbonyl compound.
