When alkyl halides react with sodium in the presence of anhydrous ether then alkanes are formed. This reaction is called Wurtz's reaction.
$CH _{3} Br +2 Na + BrCH _{3} \xrightarrow{\text { Ether }} CH _{3} \cdot CH _{3}+2 NaBr$
