Solution:

Methane can be prepared from $CH _{3} Br$ by simple hydrogenation.

$CH _{3} Br + H _{2} \stackrel{ Pd }{\longrightarrow } CH _{4}+ HBr$

Ethane can be prepared by Wurtz reaction,

$CH _{3} Br \frac{\Delta, Na }{\text { dryether }} CH _{3}- CH _{3}+2 NaBr$
