Solution:

In the presence of oxidising agents such as $HNO_{3}$ direct, iodination of benzene is possible. The electrophiles formed in this case is $\left[I^{+}\right]$ .

$\text{H}^{\text{+}} \, \text{+} \, \text{HNO}_{\text{3}} \, \text{+} \, \frac{\text{1}}{\text{2}} \text{I}_{\text{2}} \rightarrow \underset{\text{Iodine} \, \text{cation}}{\text{I}^{\text{+}}} \, \text{+} \, \text{NO}_{\text{2}} \, \text{+} \, \text{H}_{\text{2}} \text{O}$
