Solution:

Benzaldehyde on heating with $NaOH $ gives benzyl alcohol and sodium benzoate. This reaction is known as Cannizzaro reaction where those aldehydes which do not have an $\alpha$ -hydrogen atom undergoes self oxidation and reduction.
