Q.
At $300\, K$ and $1$ atmospheric pressure, $10\, mL$ of a hydrocarbon required $55\, mL$ of $O_2$ for complete combustion and $40\, mL$ of $CO_2$ is formed. The formula of the hydrocarbon is :

Solution:
$C _{ x } H _{ y }+\left( x +\frac{ y }{4}\right) O _2 \longrightarrow xCO _2+\frac{ y }{2} H _2 O$
$1010\left(x+\frac{y}{4}\right) 10 x$
By given data, $10\left(x+\frac{y}{4}\right)=55 \ldots . .(1)$
$10 x=40 \ldots . .(2)$
$\therefore x=4, y=6 \Rightarrow C_4 H_6$
