Lichens are composite organisms. They contain permanent association of a fungal (mycobiont) and an algal partner (Phycobiont). The mycobiont is dominant and belong to Ascomycetes (e.g., Parmelia, Usnea) or sometimes Basidiomycetes (as in Corella, Cora).
Phycobiont belongs to Chlorophyceae (e.g., Chlorella, Palmella) or can be BGA (e.g., Nostoc).
Lichen term was coined by Theophrastus, who is also The Father of Botany. Algae prepare food for fungi and fungi provide shelter and absorb mineral nutrient & water for its partner. Lichens are very good pollution indicator. They do not grow in polluted areas. They are perennial, and their growth is slow.
