Solution:

Oxidation of toluene using $CrO _{3}$ in acetic anhydride or $CrO _{2} Cl _{2}$ in $CCl _{4}$ or $CS _{2}$ and then hydrolysis gives benzaldehyde. No such intermediate is formed.
